The Orange City Public Library’s Summer Reading Program beings with a Kick Off Carnival on June 1 at Windmill Park and runs through July 11. Events for all ages are planned, from story time for the youngest set to Mahjong for adults, there’s something everyone will enjoy! Check out all our events on our calendar or on our Summer Reading landing page. Along with events, we also have a reading challenge for all ages. Pick up paper logs for this at the library from June 1-July 11.
The Orange City Public Library’s book bike will provide a new way for us to connect with the community outside or our physical walls. We’re envisioning story times around town, visits to the Farmer’s Market, deliveries to retirement communities, and other pop-up adventures.
The ebike was custom ordered from Icicle Tricycles, a company that builds cargo bikes for use around the world. One of our own staff members was able to design the wrap that surrounds the front cargo box. It pays homage to Orange City’s Dutch store fronts, the Tulip Festival, and of course books!
The cargo box features bookshelves and a chalkboard with pamphlet holders, along with a fold-down counter, and holsters for an umbrella. Last but not least, the e-assist feature will help us power through with heavy loads and up hills.
We want to thank the community and the local Kiwanis Club for their financial support towards the bike. Funds from past book sales went towards the purchase and Kiwanis donated $1,300 for safety equipment and accessories.
The library is excited to debut our new book bike during Tulip Festival. Watch for us in Thursday afternoon’s parade and at our story time on the southwest corner of the Sioux County Courthouse lawn.

1000 Book Before Kindergarten is the beginning of an incredible journey that encourages a child to have a passion for reading at a young age. Setting aside time to read with your child also creates memories and priceless bonding time. Receive a free book when you sign up your child (ages birth – preschool) for this fun, self-paced program at the front desk of the library. Record the books you read, and then you can sign up to attend a graduation ceremony for your child after you read 1,000 books!
